Slovakia is making a bold national commitment to artificial intelligence and schools are at the centre of it. In September 2025, the Slovak Ministry of Education launched the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence in Education Plan 2025–2027, a comprehensive strategy that embeds AI literacy across the entire education system, from primary schools to universities.
From the 2026/2027 school year, national curricula will be updated to include AI as a subject at primary and secondary level. Pupils will learn not only how AI works technically, but also how to use it responsibly and ethically which is a priority that mirrors the values driving our own work at ADI.
At university level, two AI Competence Centres are to be established from 2026 at Slovakia’s two largest technical universities, supported by law and backed by an indicative allocation of EUR 15 million from Programme Slovakia 2021–27. These centres will drive research, modernise study programmes, and connect academia with industry and civil society.
The initiative also includes an AI voucher pilot programme (EUR 2.8 million) to support schools in procuring and testing proven AI tools which makes technology accessible to institutions of all sizes.
These developments took centre stage at the Bratislava AI Forum 2025 (24–26 November), which brought together government, education, and technology leaders for a high-level summit and OECD Global Forum on the future of education and skills. Slovakia’s profile in this space is clearly rising: during Computer Science Education Week 2025, Slovakia ranked second globally (behind only the United States) in the number of schools participating in the AI Hour, with 116 registered events.
